Bunker Hills Regional Park

Bunker Hills Regional Park Professional Review and Guide

"Welcome to the northernmost hike detailed in this book. Come for the miles of paved and unpaved trails through restored prairies and forest; stay for everything else. With a golf course, playgrounds, an archery range, and even a water park, Bunker Hills Regional Park offers so much to do that you might want to reserve a spot at the campground and stay a while.

Like many other parks, Bunker Hills offers a network of both paved and natural-surface trails to choose from. The key distinction at Bunker Hills is that the paved and unpaved trails are less duplicative than some places, with each covering distinct parts of the park and creating different experiences."

"This part of Anoka County is made up of sandy soil—so sandy that early attempts at farming failed. The county’s Parks and Recreation Department created Bunker Hills in 1963 and since then has created a full-service regional park.

Like everything else in this regional park, the 7.4 miles of 8-foot-wide, asphalt-covered hiking trails are well groomed, well maintained, and nicely laid out as part of an overall development plan that appears well organized and administrated."

Brittney is right; this is a great trail to just spend an afternoon walking, biking, blading, or pushing the kids around. My dad and I go to this lake several times a year and last year we started bringing my son 18mths at the time. He did pretty well in his wagon and only started to get antsy toward the end of the trip. This will defiantly be one we visit for years to come.

The very best in urban trails! (Biking, walking, running, blading, canoing/kayaking/windsurfing(on the lakes) you name it.) A classic in the Twin Cities area that people from around the metropolitan area flock to in the spring, summer and fall months. The Lake Harriet band shell even puts on free concerts in the summer; you can grab some of their great ice cream and watch the picturesque sailboats floating along in the breeze. There's also a bunch of cute neighborhoods right around the lakes (Linden Hills, Uptown, 50th&France, etc.) that have little shops great for leisurely strolling (ice cream, bread, novelty, books, etc.) Calhoun has a great volleyball area near Thomas Beach. The trails also connect with the trail that runs along Minnehaha creek through Minneapolis.
