Wild River State Park

Wild River State Park Professional Review and Guide

"The trails go from a large meadow to a lowland forest on broad terraces alongside the river, featuring an Interpretive center and wildflowers in the forest and the prairie. Wild River refers not to a turbulent whitewater river, but to the National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968.

This act, which included the Saint Croix as one of the eight original designated rivers, protected rivers rich in ecological, scenic, recreational, geologic, historic, and cultural significance. And the Saint Croix River easily meets these criteria, with abundant animal life and lush forests. This park follows 16 miles of river, covered with virgin forests, some secondary growth forest, and wetlands."

We packed back to one of the remote sites. Their remote sites are beautiful and well-kept. They even have pictures at the main office so you can choose which site you want. Yes, you have to share the trails with horses, but I found it much easier than hiking through waist-high grass like at Jay Cooke State Park. The whole park was very pleasant - I can't wait to go back!

Very scenic area along the St. Croix River. Hiked in to backpacker campsites which were about 2 miles from the parking area. Nice easy hike in. I personally looked at 3 of the backpacker sites. All nice sites with fire grate, picnic table, and pit toilet. One site had a small camping cabin/shelter. Nice sites to let people new to backpacking get some experience. On the hike out I took the "difficult" route. Nice hike to get limbered up that I would rate moderate for an experienced hiker.

I found this park interesting in that there was so varied, prairie trails and woodland trails. It was interesting to see how each area changed and had it's own characteristics. But half the trails were shared with horses and with the sand, the horses kept the trails pretty soft and it was difficult hiking through the soft sand. Also, there are a lot of camping in the park, so there are a lot of people around, if you like solitude, you won't like this park much. I would rate it 6 out of 10.

This trail was excellent. If you don't mind sharing a trail with horses, this is the one for you. it brings you through two distinct plant cultural areas. from prarie to forest this trail has it all. it is a very easy trail to do in a day. i highly suggest this trail for a nice day hike. not too far from the twin cities so you can make a whole day out of it and still get home in time for dinner! the trail leads you right down by the St. Croix river and gives you a few areas to hang out and relax by the river.
