Paul Bunyan State Forest South Unit

Paul Bunyan State Forest (South Unit) Professional Review and Guide

"This ride is the first ride I did on a forest road, as opposed to an actual trail. Most of the road loops up here are longer in mileage, but the roads are in such good condition they allow you to spin along and soak in the solitude of the North Country. There is virtually no traffic, and the roads curve around lakes and over rolling hills to make for a fine mountain bike experience.

There are many miles of road and trail loops in the forest—if you have several days to spare you might be able to hit most of them. This trail also provides access to the paved Paul Bunyan State Trail. Also nearby is Itasca State Park and the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi. Nearby towns of Bemidji and Walker are good sources of inside information on the best trails. Tread: Entire loop is gravel and hard-packed forest road."
