Downriver Ramble Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The historically working-class communities along the Detroit River, south of the city, are collectively known as the ?downriver? area. While the area's reputation is industrial, and eyebrows may rise when you say you?re going to ride downriver, this ramble follows the river to an urban oasis ? Grosse Ile. The largest island in the Detroit River, Grosse Ile is now an upscale suburban community with quiet, mostly well-paved roads and a bike path bisecting the island. Homes are built across the road from the shoreline, so you?ll have a water view along the perimeter roads.

There's a small business district with restaurants to relax in before you return to the mainland. The downriver suburbs grew up as the bedroom communities for the working class who spent their days on Detroit's assembly lines. These days, Wyandotte, the starting point for the ramble, is experiencing gentrification. Upscale condos now line the river, and the downtown, where a well-regarded art fair is held in mid-July, is resurging. Terrain: Flat. Some rougher pavement on West River Road between miles 10 and 11."
