The Hiawatha National Forest divides nicely into two units. The eastern portion of the forest stretches from Whitefish Bay down to the Straits of Mackinac. The western portion begins at the western edge of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, reaching halfway between Munising and Marquette. Its southern edge is along Lake Michigan, including the shores of Big and Little Bays de Noc and the peninsula in between them. Combined, both halves total nearly 900,000 acres of forest.
