Welcome to elk country. The region around Pigeon River is home to the largest elk herd (not in captivity) east of the Mississippi. There are viewing points throughout the area from the roadside in places known to show elk. This campground and the elk area are named for the river that runs right through it. Paddlers have carry-in access, and anglers may catch 3 vari- eties of trout. Hikers will enjoy this spot, as it has a trailhead for the Shingle Mill Pathway, 5 loops through varying terrain adding up to 14 miles. A half mile west lies the High Country Trail with over 80 miles of trail connecting 8 other state forest campgrounds here in Pigeon River Country.
