Sand Lakes Quiet Area Trails

Sand Lakes Quiet Area Trails Professional Review and Guide

"This is one of the most popular ski areas in the region, yet it also feels like one of the most remote, depending on where you are on the system. The quiet area gets its name from the fact that no motorized vehicles are allowed in this 2,800-acre tract within the Pere Marquette State Forest. Only foot and bike travel are allowed. That indescribable roaring silence is appreciated only when you experience it.

The only sounds are of the wind rustling through the trees and your skis gliding on snow, except for the occasional airplane. Tree roots help create tiny rolling bumps over much of the way, but in general terrain is delightfully not too difficult and perfect for day skiers or families with small children. Surface quality: All trails are ungroomed, because no motorized vehicles are allowed in the quiet area, but the routes get enough traffic that there are generally skier-set tracks."

The outer perimeter of this trail is fairly straight with slight grades. At the start and end it is very narrow and winds around many trees. The area is made up of mature hardwoods. We didn't ahve time to go to the inner sections of the trail but it looked like there were hills to navigate. I will go to this trail again and explore.
