Three Oaks Challenge Professional Review and Guide
"One of the best parts of this ride occurs even before you start?visiting the Bicycle Museum operated by the Three Oaks Spokes bicycle club. Within the small brick building is the history of two-wheeled, human-powered transportation, from the ?boneshaker? velocipede of the 1860s to one of the bikes Greg LeMond rode to his Tour de France victory in 1989. In addition to the museum, the Three Oaks Spokes has developed a dozen different routes departing from it. This ride is an adapted combination of two of those routes.
A winery, Warren Dunes State Park on Lake Michigan, and acres of rolling farmland are the highlights. Thanks to the Three Oaks Spokes, Three Oaks is probably the closest thing to a bicycling mecca in Michigan. In addition to the Bicycle Museum, it sponsors the largest one-day ride in Michigan, the Apple Cider Century. Held on the last Sunday in September, it attracts 6,000 cyclists from Michigan, Indiana, and Chicago. For a little more solitude, avoid that weekend and start your day in the Bicycle Museum, where about two dozen bikes trace the history of two-wheeled transportation. Terrain: Mostly rolling, some hills and some flat sections."
