Van Buren State Park to South Haven

Van Buren State Park to South Haven Professional Review and Guide

"The Van Buren State Park has a beautiful 1-mile long beach with sand dunes and dune bluffs that rise 50 to 100 feet up from the lake. At about Mile 1.0 you will see the remains of an old pier or dock, roughly marking the end of public land. For the next 3.0 miles you will be paddling along private beaches.

With the exception of the state park and the South Haven Public Beach, most of the land along this route is private so you will need to enjoy the view of the dune bluffs and sand beaches from the water. South Haven has a great public beach and a long harbor breakwall with lighthouse and raised catwalk."

Paddled this route in late summer before work one day. Took about three hours from Van Buren to the light at South Haven and back. Nice scenery most of the way, the only problem was all the private land between put-in and South Haven. Still, worth the hour drive from Kalamazoo.
