Fox River

Fox River Professional Review and Guide

"A picturesque but deadfall-strewn U.P. stream that offers tremendous trout fishing. The Fox River has been a favored U.P. trout-fishing destination ever since Ernest Hemingway haunted these northwoods (the author’s “Big Two Hearted River” story was actually based on his experiences along the banks of the Fox). But it receives only light pressure from paddlers, due to the logjams and other navigational hazards that periodically appear as you make your way down the river corridor.

These obstacles won’t faze experienced wilderness canoeists. But they make the Fox a poor choice if you’re looking to introduce someone to the joys of canoeing. The narrow river requires carryovers or portages at multiple points, and the latter can be an epic hassle, due to the overgrown banks and absence of trails. Moreover, the Fox is infamous for housing summertime mosquito populations that can drive even the hardiest visitors batty."
