The lake the Native Americans called Gitche Gumme is Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake by surface area in the world. This campground is parked right on its shore. Sites are staggered along the single park road for good privacy, and tree cover provides shade. The sandy beach stretches for miles in either direction, and the sites on the north side of the strip are just steps from it. The shore faces north-northwest, so sunsets are brilliant. A host is on-site in summer months.
