The big boats—freighters, ore ships—make the 21-foot vertical journey between Lake Superior and Lake Huron at the Soo Locks using the St. Marys River to get from the locks to Huron’s open water. This campground has front row seats for watching the ships passing on the river. Sites are grassy and have no shade. There are 24 premium sites at the river’s edge, but no tents are allowed in that row for safety reasons. Still there are benches for campers to sit and watch water traffic. This is a good spot for special city events, such as late June’s annual tug- boat race. The Soo Locks are open for viewing as well.
