Ocqueoc Falls Cruise

Ocqueoc Falls Cruise Professional Review and Guide

"A waterfall and a lighthouse familiar to locals but well off the beaten tourist path highlight this ride through northeast Michigan's Presque Isle County. Ocqueoc Falls, the largest waterfall in the Lower Peninsula, is a popular local picnic and swimming destination. A trail alongside the Ocqueoc River below the falls allows you a little more solitude. 40 Mile Point Lighthouse, a pretty brick lighthouse with a somewhat unusual square lighthouse tower, is one of those lighthouses that looks like it actually might have been a comfortable home, in contrast to many others.

Open stretches of Lake Huron and lightly traveled roads are other highlights. Given its location on Lake Huron, the only port along the 80 miles of shoreline between Cheboygan and Alpena, Rogers City has a long nautical history. Along Huron Avenue the Avenue of Flags pays tribute to the merchant marine industry and the sailors who work in it. In Lakeside Park, a fitting place to start, a giant ship propeller and anchor are a memorial to sailors who lost their lives on the Carl D. Bradley and Str. Cedarville, ships based out of Rogers City that sank on the Great Lakes. Terrain: Rolling; some good-sized hills on first half of ride, on Michigan Highway 68, and on Ocqueoc Road."
