"This hike has it all. Every scenic attraction that draws hikers to the Porkies is here. Rock balconies in the first few miles offer broad Lake Superior views, before the trail descends to parallel the lake’s wave-washed shore. After a 6-mile-long sojourn near the big lake, the route turns inland, ascending alongside the cascading Big Carp River to Shining Cloud Falls. After the 10-mile mark, old-growth forest brackets the rest of the hike’s path as the trail winds its way up the Big Carp River Valley, passing below the cliffs of Miscowawbic Peak. For a grand finale the hike switchbacks up to the Escarpment and offers a parade of far-reaching views from that ridge’s heights."

This is a long trail for a day hike, but well worth the effort. The weather along the lake can be unpredictable so come prepared. If you plan on taking this hike after the 2nd week in April be prepared to battle the flies on the lake shore. Some of the views are truly breath taking so bring a camera.

The Lake superior Trail is a great backcountry route through the entire Porcupine Wilderness areas. There are great, dense stands of timber along the way and plenty of wildlife viewing opportunities. One may actually be surprised how long you can go without seeing the lake from this trail. There isn't a lot of sand beach along the route but on a hot day you will manage to find a way through the rocks into the cool lake. Be sure to take advantage of the bear poles at the designated camping sites as campers are often robbed by black bears in this area.
