"For many Porkies’ veterans, the Escarpment is at the top of any “don’t miss” list of outings in the park. Open meadows on this ridgetop offer long sight lines and memorable views of the area’s landmarks. Far to the west, past Lafayette Peak’s craggy south face, Lake Superior sparkles in the distance. Off to the southeast the Trap Hills dimple the horizon. Hundreds of feet below the Escarpment’s craggy heights, Lake of the Clouds feeds the headwaters of the Big Carp River." Read more

This hike was beautiful. Worth every challenging incline to see Lake if the Clouds with Superior on the horizon. My only regret was not camping in one of the rustic sites directly off of the trail.

The Porcupine Mountains has to be one of America's finest state parks. Containing one of the largest virgin stands of hardwoods east of the Mississipi this area has a lot to offer. One should find the Escaprment trail well marked and not too busy at any time of the year. The trail can be snow shoed or skiied in the winter. As always in the UP expect to encounter a lot of mosquitoes in the summer.
