Orchard Lake Nature Sanctuary

Orchard Lake Nature Sanctuary Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The sanctuary’s Main Trail, Marsh Trail, Lakeview Loop, Woodland Loop, and Pond Trail weave through stately old- and new-growth forests amid the rolling terrain in northwestern Oakland County. The five trails also wind around wetlands and a vernal pond. Snow glories bloom in the spring, blanketing the forest grounds in purple and blue."

"Surrounded by the palatial homes of Orchard Lake Village, Orchard Lake Nature Sanctuary preserves 50 acres of natural woodland on Orchard Lake. Though small—the sanctuary only has 1.5 miles of trails—the park offers a variety of natural settings, from views of the lake to a walk through tall trees to a prairie overflowing with flowers. Orchard Lake Village is named for the large lake that takes up 1.2 of the town’s 4.1 square miles. In a county with a lot of lakes, Orchard Lake is a big one. Its 795 acres are second only to nearby Cass Lake, which tops 1,200. In the middle of the lake is Apple Island. When settlers came to this part of Michigan, they planted apple trees on the island and thus settled a score of place names in one swipe."
