Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Professional Review and Guide

"A spectacular shoreline of rugged cliffs, remote beaches, and towering dunes that is best explored via sea kayak. Imagine dipping your paddle in clear, emerald-green water, and peering upward at the overhanging face of a 200-foot sandstone cliff. Mineral-laden water seeps from the rock, painting vertical stripes in every color of the rainbow.

You cross through a shower of drips to enter a small cavern in the base of the rock, where you marvel at the play of light on the water and the smooth walls. The mechanical hum of a distant tour boat reminds you how lucky you are to be experiencing Pictured Rocks in the most intimate way possible—by sea kayak."

A bit of change from my normal whitewater paddling, but never-the-less, exciting. This is one of the most beautiful paddling experiences I have experienced. The weather was perfect, sunny and warm, with a light breeze. We experienced fairly calm waves, 2-3 feet and a steady breeze from the northwest. Just a little warning, you need to be careful with the weather, it can get very rough around this area. Sometimes the wind can push you faster then you want into the rocks. Pictured Rocks is very beautiful. The water is a vibrant blue and the rocks jut out of the water like turrets on a castle. As long as you can catch a good weather day, this trip is well worth the long drive. I highly recommend it...just try it in a sea kayak, not a whitewater boat, it can be frustrating in the waves. Happy Paddling! :)
