Grand Island Loop

Grand Island Loop Professional Review and Guide

"This is simply the most spectacular ride in Michigan. A pontoon ferryboat whisks visitors 0.5 mile across Lake Superior to rugged Grand Island. The route follows the perimeter of the island and offers views of sandstone cliffs, sea caves, and 1,000-foot freighters.

Alert riders will catch glimpses of nearby Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore as the trail turns south after the 12-mile point. At times the well-marked trail passes sugar-sand beaches that look more like Hawaii than rocky Lake Superior shoreline. Purchased by Hiawatha National Forest in 1990 from the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company, the island also provides primitive campsites, particularly popular with sea kayakers. Tread: 17.15 miles of singletrack, 0.2 mile of doubletrack, 4.35 miles of dirt road."

The guide says this is the best ride in the U.P. I beg to differ. While it IS incredibly beautiful, it is not single track mountain biking. This trail is a former road (unpaved but still) and one of the tire tracks has mostly grown over, so I guess that's why they think they can call it "single track," but I don't think I'd consider this to be mountain biking. It is technically simple and has virtually no challenges except for the fact that there are some long climbs. They weren't fun interesting or challenging climbs, just long. People on cross bikes, comfort bikes and hybrids will be totally comfortable here. Also, the ferry costs $20 per person round trip. Probably better to go there for a hike and scenery viewing rather than a dedicated, hard core mountain bike adventure. (Although the ferry people were fun, friendly, interesting characters.)
great ride in the UP. the riding is relatively easy single and double track, mostly flat with some moderate hills. the lakeside views are spectacular and make this a must do. secluded but well marked trails and beautiful beaches on lake superior for a chilly swim. rode the begining with the family then took of solo for the island loop, but family and kids with some endurance and time could also ride all of this one.
Plenty of solitude on this ride. Rode for two hours without seeing anyone. Flushed out an eagle on one curve. I'm not sure who was more surprised. I would not ride this one alone again. At times there is nothing between you and a cliff except an orange snow fence.
