Chapel Loop

Chapel Loop Professional Review and Guide

"Take even the briefest of glances at this route’s attractions, and the reasons for its reputation are obvious. This hike begins in a quiet forest and continues to a notable waterfall. Next it arrives on the shores of Earth’s largest freshwater lake, but not just in any old spot. For 5 eye-catching miles, the path follows what may well be the U.P.’s most spectacular shoreline.

A parade of convoluted cliffs, natural arches, and rushing streams line the trail, which hugs the rim of the escarpment between Chapel Beach and the Mosquito River. Grand Island’s sharp northern prow marks the western horizon, while the eastern shore arcs to far-off Au Sable Point."

I have family in the UP and enjoy this area when I visit. There are many trail options. The loop trail is long and excellent with amazing views along the lakeshore! The sandstone cliffs are awesome.

This hike has it all. The beaches of Florida, the cliffs of California Big Sur and the forests of the Northwest all rolled into one. Absolutely stunning scenery, easy to moderate hiking, clean well-maintained campsites, and easy access. One of my best hikes, especially for the Midwest.

Fabulous hike - but a good 9 mile round trip to the shoreline of lake Superior. Chapel rock & beach are beautiful, but so is the actual hike. Do the complete loop rather than back-tracking your steps. The western loop trail is relatively unused & the view of Chapel lake on the way back is spectacular. Plan on a full day trip and pack a snack or picnic lunch for the beach if you can!

This is by far the best part of the pictured rocks trail. If you're looking for a good day hike near Munising this is it. I don't suggest bringing little kids along because it's about 4.5 miles round trip and the few people I saw there with little kids were having to carry them back after about 1-1.5 miles but if you're sure your kids can handle a 1-1.5 hour trip I would definitely recommend it. I first stopped here on my way down the Pictured Rocks trail and loved it so much that I brought my family there the next week.

The chapel to mosquito loop is the most picturesque section of the Pictured Rocks Nat'l lakeshore. A short 9 mile loop, it's easily done in a day and a great way to break-in your Junior Hikers, as I did with my sons: 15, 9, and 6 at the time.

This hike has one of the most unforgettable sites I have ever encountered while hiking anywhere in the USA. Chapel rock ia approppriately named - it is a place to meet God. Make sure to inspect the tree growing on it from both the cliff that the rock tower breaks away from near the top as well as from the beach. It is dramatic and edifying. The beginning of the hike was fairly muddy when I did it - but do not let this stop you. The lakeshore, beach and creek alone would be worth it - but Chapel Rock made this hike a place of contemplation on my life.
