Huron River

Huron River Professional Review and Guide

"A highly accessible river with a mellow temperament that makes it a favorite getaway for families throughout the Detroit metropolitan area. The Huron River is a constant and comforting presence in the Detroit metropolitan area. From the pricey lakeside developments of northwestern Oakland County, to the peaceful farm country around the growing villages of Hamburg and Dexter, to the leafy campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, to the busy industrial communities downriver from Detroit—the Huron is always there.

Despite its proximity to numerous small towns and larger cities, the river still has a rural feel for much of its length due to the abundance of public land along its shores. State and local governments have worked together to create an extensive system of parks that make the Huron one of the most accessible rivers in the state. A moderate current, few obstacles or hazards, a variety of wildlife, and plentiful picnic and camping options add to its appeal as a quick getaway destination for families."

The Huron River offers some great paddling. I have kayaked two sections: Argo Park to Gallup Park - surprisingly serene and beautiful for traveling through the heart of Ann Arbor. The only downside: lots of traffic close to Gallup park. Island Lake Rec Area to Huron Meadows Metropark - absolutely gorgeous. Really secluded and peaceful, slow moving, almost entirely through state rec areas and metroparks. Near US-23 ran into a problem with fallen trees with no paths cleared. This required some inventive maneuvering. Not really a problem within park boundaries. Island Lake and Huron Meadows are a short drive from each other, making it easy to drop off a car prior to this 11 mile stretch of river.
The trail report for the Huron River has been very helpful. A friend and I have now kayaked from Portlage Lake to Ypsilanti, using the trail report as our guide. We've been doing the river in sections, and the guide is a great tool for determining where to put in and get off the river. Karen K. Gregory, MI
