Craig Lake

Craig Lake Professional Review and Guide

"Craig Lake comes with an attitude check. Persist through 6 miles of rough, bumpy road that winds its way to the trailhead, and the rewards will begin as soon as you shut off the ignition. Odds are, that will be the last mechanical sound you’ll hear during your visit to Michigan’s most remote state park. Highlights: A remote lake, marsh and stream, and quiet forest."

Lots of hilly terrain, and overall a nice trail. It's well marked, but aside from a few views of the lake, not much else to see. We saw some mushrooms and a lot of mosquitoes, but no wildlife--not even a bird. We were pretty disappointed in this trail. When we got to the parking lot, it was full. Didn't see many people on the trail though.
But for lack of wildlife, this trail would be a 5. It is not difficult, it is remote, the trail itself is mostly soft forest bed, it has plenty of spots to stop and see the lake AND it has outhouses near the two rustic cabins. An incredibly pleasant way to spend three hours. Lots of wild mushrooms in glorious colors but don't eat any unless you really know your stuff.
