Marquette Ramble

Marquette Ramble Professional Review and Guide

"Taking advantage of Marquette's beautiful location on Lake Superior, this ride utilizes the city's lakefront bike path. It also circles an island park and follows an out-and-back spur to a hiking trail that leads you to a bird's-eye view of the city and Lake Superior. Other highlights of this ride around the Upper Peninsula's largest city are Northern Michigan University and Marquette's historic, hilly downtown. According to the local bike shops, road biking is making a resurgence in Marquette, which has been better known for its mountain biking.

In 2001, in fact, Bike Magazine named it the No. 2 city for biking and living. Like many communities in the U.P., however, Marquette has a limited number of paved secondary roads outside of town. It also gets hilly. Consequently, to keep this ride at ramble level, the route stays mostly within city limits, with the exception of an 8.3-mile round-trip spur out to Sugarloaf Mountain. Terrain: Flat to rolling. Some climbs around Presque Isle Park and around downtown Marquette. County Road 550 has a gradual incline out to Sugarloaf Mountain."
