Marquette Professional Review and Guide
"Sandy beaches, imposing cliffs, historic lighthouses, and scenic harbors all adorn the shoreline of the Upper Peninsula’s largest city. Marquette is our kind of town. Attractive and robust in a distinctly “northcountry” sort of way, the city perches on a scenic stretch of Lake Superior shoreline that is replete with attractive sea-kayaking spots. Moreover, the bustling town is situated within a few hours’ drive of many of the Upper Peninsula’s finest canoeing rivers and inland lakes.
Little wonder, then, that the rooftops of many of the vehicles that line Marquette’s neighborhood streets bristle with strapped-down kayaks and canoes. But while canoeists and river-kayakers have to stray outside the city limits to sate their paddling appetites, Marquette-area sea-kayakers merely have to walk out their front doors. Indeed, the waters that guard this handsome city’s eastern flanks include a wide array of attractions, from rugged Lake Superior coastline to harbors that provide refuge to massive Great Lakes freighters. And the city itself is pleasing to observe from the water, for much of its downtown district sits atop high bluffs that look out over the lake."
