Tip of the Mitt Classic

Tip of the Mitt Classic Professional Review and Guide

"The Straits of Mackinac, at the very tip of the mitten that is Michigan's Lower Peninsula, is the highlight of this coast-to-coast route. Here land and water meet, as Lake Huron and Lake Michigan flow into each other, while overhead, the Mackinac Bridge connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. You can visit a historic fort, take a ferry to Mackinac Island for some more biking, visit a museum on the construction of the world's longest suspension bridge, or blend with the "fudgies" in Mackinaw City.

The northwest part of the ride follows roads popular with organized rides, so expect company. As you ride along the tip of Michigan's mitten, you?ll get a good sense of the diversity Michigan offers cyclists, from winding roads dusted with beach sand to a freeway overpass, from coastline to farmland to woods, from flat to not-so- flat. Terrain: Flat to rolling, with some bigger hills toward the end of the ride, in Emmet County west of U.S. Highway 31."
