Mackinac Island State Park Trails

Mackinac Island State Park Trails Professional Review and Guide

"Want to experience Mackinac Island as close as you can to the way it was in the 18th and 19th centuries with the added luxuries that you’ll experience back at your hotel or B&B room? Come here in winter. There may be no more serene and beautiful spots in the state than what you’ll find on the trails of the island.

Locals will tell that this is how the island is meant to be seen, devoid of summer’s crowds and filled with quiet. You can glide by some of the finest examples of Victorian-era “cottages” found anywhere. Trails are well kept but little used, except by a handful of locals who ski regularly. The entire northern side of the island is blocked off and available to skiers and snowshoers only. Surface quality: Groomed as needed. Mostly single track set, with a few areas of double track."

"Who would have guessed that one of Michigan’s most popular tourist attractions was also home to Michigan’s most difficult section of singletrack? The first 1.2 miles of the Tranquil Bluff Trail will leave you anything but tranquil. Following a steep, rooty route along a cliff, the trail provides peek-a-boo glimpses of Lake Huron. It is also possible to skip this difficult portion of the trail and pick up Tranquil Bluff a little farther along the route.

The rest of the ride follows well-marked interconnecting singletracks that crisscross the middle of the island. In short, it is a spectacular place to bike, where motorized vehicles are not allowed and horses are the only other traffic on the streets. Horses are also common on the trails, so never submit to your need for speed. End your ride by cycling the paved road around the island, and take in the views of late-1800s Victorian homes. As you wait for your ferry ride home, sample the delicious fudge for which the island is famous. Tread: 0.7 mile of dirt road, 2.3 miles of paved road, 6.3 miles of singletrack."

A classic bike ride for the family, with incredible scenery. Best of all, only bikes and no motorized traffic!!! I took my kids (10 and 8), and we were able to ride our bikes around the relatively flat island, and finish with an ice cream it town. If you are ambitious, do the island 2 or 3 times.....

My wife and I loved the trail, though the first 1.5 miles was much too difficult for us. We ended up walking most of that portion -- very steep and technical -- cut on the side of a bluff -- pretty intimidating. The rest of the trail was fun and challenging.

Take your mountain or hybrid bike with you to Mackinac Island. Only $6 to ferry it. It's easy to get on and off the ferry with your bike. Once you're there and see the long lines and $40 (daily) fees for 21 speed bikes you'll be glad you brought your own. Take your pick of trails: from the 8 mile paved shoreline road circling the island to the paved and hard packed trails that cut through the island, bicycling Mackinac is the way to go.
