Pine River

Pine River Professional Review and Guide

"Swift and strong, the Pine River has a North Country ambience and challenging runs that make it one of the Lower Peninsula’s top paddling destinations. The Pine River is one of the most appealing streams in the entire state. Passing through Manistee National Forest and other public land for much of its length, the cold, clear river rambles past banks that bristle with towering pines and deep hardwood forests.

This natural beauty, combined with the river’s reputation as one of the fastest in the Lower Peninsula, makes it a real gem for canoeing and river kayaking enthusiasts. In fact, the Pine’s charms attract so many paddling visitors that the U.S. Forest Service instituted a canoe permit system for the river back in 1978 that remains in force today. This system controls overuse somewhat, but be warned that thick clots of paddlers do descend on the river on many summer weekends."
