Bald Mountain State Recreation Area

Bald Mountain State Recreation Area Professional Review and Guide

"For a long hike with lots of trees and hills, there are few spots in southeast Michigan that can beat the North Unit trails at Bald Mountain in Lake Orion. The two loops, split by Harmon Road, take in a half dozen lakes and ponds and skirt some wetlands (but not too close).

For an easier hike, just tackle one of the loops—both start from the same parking area. This trail passes through state land open to hunting. Wear appropriate bright clothing during hunting season."

"The Red Loop is the gentler of the two major trail networks at the Bald Mountain State Recreation Area in northern Oakland County and passes mostly through hilly woodlands thick with maples and oaks and laced with wetlands. The trail passes through areas open to hunting, which is especially a concern during firearms season for deer. Wear an orange vest or avoid the trail during mid- to late November."

"Bald Mountain has two mountain bike trails in close proximity, though not really connected. This north trail is the more challenging of the two. It’s longer, with hillier terrain, narrower trails, and more obstacles. It has a nice smooth flow and it’s not overly technical, nor are the hills overly long in comparison to some other trails in the region.

It’s a great ride for the intermediate biker, yet it can still offer a good day out for the advanced rider as well. Parts of this trail can be muddy after rains and in the spring season. Best of all, this is a beautiful trail to ride."

"Cruising past inland lakes and creeks, these two tree-lined loops offer riders a rollicking good time. Rocky descents, sand traps, and a few steep hills keep you alert, but for the most part these two cruisers promise a fast forest ride.

The 4,600-acre park is a pristine escape from the greater Detroit bustle, although the gun noise from a nearby shooting range occasionally interrupts the pastoral image. Tread: 7.5 miles of singletrack, 0.2 mile of doubletrack (North Loop); 3.8 miles of singletrack, 0.2 mile of doubletrack (South Loop)."

"The North Unit Trails of Bald Mountain State Recreation Area traverse some of the hilliest and steepest terrain in southeast Michigan. This portion of the park is thick with hardwood forests and is home to about a dozen lakes, as well as tamarack and cedar swamps. This is one of the region’s most scenic networks of trails (see page 135 for another hiking option here). It is especially beautiful from late September to mid-October when the leaves are turning colors."

I recently road this area, The South area was a little short and rocky . Glad I had GPS.Wear yellow in the fall, because I saw 3 hunters. Try a day when the range is not shooting , to noisy. Very pretty in the fall. The North area was a little scary for me. In the Blue and White loops there was 3 posts broken in a row. The woods were to heavy for my GPS, It might work without leaves.. Stay on the main path and get the map. Very pretty in the fall.

Awesome trails, well marked and easy to navigate. I showed up and the attendant at the main office took time to get me my parking pass, indicate where I should park and what trails to go on - VERY helpful. The difficulty level is low, easy for even beginners to do with few steep inclines, some exposed roots but nothing extraordinary. The trails are in thick forest (during summer months) and get their fair number of mosquitoes. I recommend these trails for their relative closeness to the major SE Michigan cities, good maintenance and nice staff.
