Craig Lake State Park

Craig Lake State Park Professional Review and Guide

"One of the state’s premier destinations for wilderness canoeing and camping. Even in a state bristling with quality paddling options, Craig Lake State Park stands as one of Michigan’s great destinations for canoeing and kayaking. Remote and undeveloped, it is a true northcountry paradise. The lakes of the park feature ruddy shorelines of weathered boulders and windswept forest that are ideal for afternoon hikes, while the waters themselves are clear and quiet and dotted with rugged islands that serve as grand campsites.

Craig Lake also supports an abundance of wildlife, including icons of the north like black bears, moose, and loons. Yet despite the park’s physical beauty, it remains lightly visited thanks to its dearth of creature comforts and a wonderfully nasty entrance road that effectively turns away behemoth RVs. These factors have done much to preserve the park’s peaceful and unspoiled character over the years. One can only hope that the road will be allowed to stay in its current bad-tempered state so that future generations of paddlers will be able to enjoy this wilderness gem."
