Isle Royale National Park, Shoreline and Outer Islands

Isle Royale National Park, Shoreline and Outer Islands Professional Review and Guide

"A beautiful wilderness paradise of clear bays, rocky shores, and windswept islands. Isle Royale National Park is one of Michigan’s premier wilderness kayaking destinations. The park, which includes the main island of Isle Royale as well as hundreds of satellite islands, is an oasis of rock and forest in the most remote sector of mighty Lake Superior.

Its main island, riddled with long ridges and valleys from stem to stern, wears a pelt of marshland and deep forest that supports wolf, moose, red fox, snowshoe hare, beaver, mink, and other animals (see our entry on Isle Royale’s inland lakes for more information on the park’s interior and its animal population). Its many coves and outlying islands, meanwhile, are girded with rocky outcroppings and northern boreal spruce-fir forests that echo with the aching cry of loons and the rustle of northern winds. This scenic and evocative beauty, coupled with Superior’s dangerous allure, draws sea kayakers to Isle Royale in ever greater numbers."
