The LakeLands Trail Loop

The LakeLands Trail Loop Professional Review and Guide

"LakeLands Trail State Park officially opened in 1994. So far, of the planned 36 miles, 12.6 miles of the crushed-stone trail have been completed. What exists already is fantastic. Because the railroad corridor was abandoned approximately twenty years ago, the vegetation has had years to grow, so you'll find tunnels of trees and in them birds of all colors.

Most of the way is fast going, but there are some piles of gravel around the edges of the trail. Bikes have the right side of the trail, horses the left. It's also well-marked for road crossings and driveways. A trail pass may be purchased for a small fee at the Village Cyclery on East Main in Pinckney, before you hit the trail. Things to see: Creeks, marshes, birds, wildflowers, Stockbridge's historic village square."

Start this trail off Hamburg Road in Hamburg and you have a good 7.5 miles of nicely paved trail. At the end of that paved area, it goes into hardpack small gravel, which isn't too bad and is quite rideable. Pass the old Pinckney depot, and things get bad. Cross M36 and they get horrible. Up until the Pinckney Depot, it's not too bad. It's not painful, is well maintained, and won't leave you with lots of aches and pains. Stay on the trail past M36 and it's a different story. This section is VERY rough from horse traffic. The hoof holes are like driving your car over the most potholed street you've ever been on. The attempt to throw sand and gravel over top of them makes it somewhat worse, as there's not a good speed you can go that isn't painful in some way. We attempted to get onto M36 and ride that, but were just barely being missed by cars, so decided to turn around. If they can get this paved or keep it from getting too pocked up, it'd be a great trail. Until then, bike at your own risk of headache.

The Lakeland trail is great until you west of Downtown Pinkney then it is like a bad dirt road full of pot holes from the horses. If you continue west to Gergory I suggest riding M36. M36 has plenty of room for a bike but the traffic is fast and sometimes heavy. The trail really strats in Downtown Hamburg and is paved for about 6 miles then turns to dirt which is still nice till you get to Downtown Pinkney. Happy Rididing and I will see you on the trail Bill from Hamburg
