Cross-Country Ski Headquarters Trails Professional Review and Guide

"Set near the shore of Higgins Lake, one of Michigan’s most beautiful inland lakes (once called the world’s sixth most beautiful by National Geographic), veteran ski racer Bob Frye and his wife, Lynne, have fashioned this log store that has, over the years, gained a national reputation as a great place for advice, instruction, and a great day on the trails.

That reputation has become even better. Frye now tries to supplement Mother Nature and guarantee that his trails are snow covered every season with a snowmaking system spread from 1.2 miles to 2.5 miles of the trails he’s cut since 1974, including 1.2 miles on one loop lighted by torches for weekend night touring. Snow will be made in a central spot and carted out to the trail to make this one of a handful of Nordic areas in the nation that offer guaranteed conditions. Frye plans to start making snow around November 1each year to try to be the first in the state to offer skiing. Surface quality: Track set, all groomed for skaters."

This trail network has 8 very well groomed (for skating and classic) trails. There are no real difficult downhills the grooming is so good it is almost like being on a magic carpet. There is also a "Trapper's Cabin" warming shelter along the Manitou trail that makes a great spot for a winter lunch.
