Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Access to the South Branch of the Au Sable River makes this campground attractive to paddlers and anglers alike. Every year during the last full weekend in July, close to 100 canoes take to the Au Sable River in Grayling. And the morning after the paddlers hit the water, a mass of cyclists takes off from town, trying to beat the paddlers to the finish.
This grand event is missed by the campers at the Canoe Harbor State Forest Campground. The campground is located a half dozen miles south of the Au Sable on the river’s South Branch. The main branch has its share of campgrounds, many popular with canoe liveries as places to drop off or pick up clients. Canoe Harbor has its share of traffic, but it is a quieter alternative. There are group campsites for campers who arrive by canoe, but drive-in visitors have their pick of 44 spacious sites. Each has a fire pit and picnic table. Tall pines and mixed hardwoods provide shade for most of the sites."
