Au Sable River

Au Sable River Professional Review and Guide

"TU’s home waters. Ride a narrow riverboat or wade for big browns. Local TU chapters are continuing the effort to stabilize sand banks that threaten to erode and dump suffocating sediments into the river. After cutting through the town, gathering water from the confluence with its East Branch and ducking under the highway, the river takes the shape that will sustain it through the Holy Water, eight miles of fly-fishing-only, no-kill angling. Riffling a gravel and sand bottom, tufted here and there with waving strands of
aquatic grasses, this stretch is quite wadeable and fish hold in easily seen lies.

Species: Brown, rainbow, brook.

Angling methods: spin, and fly-fishing."

I grew up on the section of the Au Sable named the "Holy Waters" It is the best fly-fishing I have ever experienced. I fished from Grayling down to White Pine Campground. It tends to be a little busy but well worth it, 12-16 inch browns can be expected. Also high quality Rainbows and Brookies. Just remember it is Fly gear only and catch and release. The best time to go is in July during the Hex hatch. The campgrounds through this stretch are clean and roomy and usually quiet, the closer the campground is to Grayling the more crowded/loud it will be. Also don't try camping/fishing the last weekend in July. The Canoe race is this weekend and along the whole stretch from grayling at the start to the mouth packed campgrounds and loud crowds will be found, but on the other hand if you are looking for the daytona 500 of canoe races come check it out, just plan really early and either reserve a spot or show up a week early at one of the first come first serve sites. While here stop in and see Rusty Gates at the Gates Lodge and Fly Shop he is argueably the most knowledgable flyfisher in the state. He is also the man responsible for Trout Unlimited whose home waters are the Holy water.
