Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: Twelvemile Beach Campground Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"The Upper Peninsula is bounded to the north by the lake the French called le lac supérieur. The Ojibwa simply called it kitchi-gami, or “the great lake.” And with his attempt at translating Finnish folk poetry into the American experience, Henry Wordsworth Longfellow called it Big-Sea-Water in The Song of Hiawatha.
Lake Superior, it seems, needs no fancy label. It is enough to behold the lake and simply say, “Wow, that’s a big body of water.” And it is. It is the largest of the Great Lakes in terms of both acreage and depth."
