Oakland Lakes Challenge

Oakland Lakes Challenge Professional Review and Guide

"This route was designed by the local cyclists to be a tour offered specifically on Memorial Day, as the holiday reduces traffic. Even then, however, cyclists should be comfortable sharing the road with cars to take on this meandering ride through western Oakland County's lake country. A 3.4-mile bike-path shortcut allows riders who want a shorter distance to take off 8.3 miles, as well as to bypass the heaviest traffic. A paved trail around Indian Springs Metropark gives you the option to add back 8 miles, so you can still get pretty close to the metric century mark.

If you're not already familiar with it, you'll get a good sense of Oakland County on the ride to the departure point. You'll pass lots of new subdivisions filled with new condos and huge new homes, and tons of shopping malls to serve the typically well-heeled Oakland County residents. (Depending on what source you check, Oakland is the second- or third-wealthiest county in the nation in terms of per-capita income.)"
