Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: South Manitou Island, Weather Station Campground Professional Review and Guide

"If you visit the historical town of Glen Haven, just west of the D. H. Day Campground in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, you can tour the old Life Saving Service Station, which is now the Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum. The demonstrations here are pretty interesting.

They put on a reenactment of the breeches buoy rescue, complete with the firing of the Lyle gun. This complex drill creates a zip line of sorts between a ship that has run aground and the shore, allowing sailors a way to land without jumping into stormy seas. From Glen Haven, the Manitou Islands are clear on the horizon, and the museum does a great job of highlighting the dangers of the Manitou Passage and the lives of the men who tried to make it a bit safer."
