Manistique River

Manistique River Professional Review and Guide

"A sleepy, family-friendly river that flows through Seney National Wildlife Refuge and Lake Superior State Forest. The highlight of a trip on the mellow Manistique is passing through Seney National Wildlife Refuge. The 95,000-acre refuge is home to some 200 species of birds— including bald eagles, osprey, loons, trumpeter swans, mergansers, and ring-necked ducks—as well as wolves and moose.

Slipping quietly through the refuge in a canoe provides great opportunities for viewing this assortment of wildlife. But the Manistique is popular with both canoeists and anglers during the summer months, so if animal sightings are your goal, early morning or evening hours may be the best time to be on the river. There is no camping in Seney National Wildlife Refuge, although canoeists are allowed to stop along the river for picnics (pack out all trash, of course)."
