Torch Lake Challenge

Torch Lake Challenge Professional Review and Guide

"Every July the Traverse City?based Cherry Capital Cycling Club hosts the Ride Around Torch, or RAT. Cyclists from around the state come for the gorgeous scenery, especially for Torch's clear waters that range from light green and turquoise to deep blue. This route is based on one of the options offered on that tour. It's a shorter, flatter route that hugs the shoreline of one of Michigan's largest inland lakes and avoids the inland hills to the east. The route includes one stretch of heavier-trafficked highway and scattered more difficult climbs.

There are great local dining options to choose from postride. National Geographic once named Torch Lake the third most beautiful lake in the world. This tidbit is often cited by local tourism folks and real estate agents, and it's become more lore than fact. Some fudge it, saying only that the magazine deemed it ?one of? the world's most beautiful. But don?t waste your time looking it up. Instead, look at the lake. Its clarity and changing colors, from green to turquoise to deep blue, will likely convince you that Torch Lake will make for a beautiful ride. Terrain: Mix of flat and rolling hills. Most climbs are short and gradual."

This is a pleasant ride, but would recommend leaving early in the morning when the car traffic is at a minumum. The east side has more traffic so plan accordingly. I saw lots of wildlife and there are a couple of breakfast options on the route in Alden.
