The Tunnel of Trees

The Tunnel of Trees Professional Review and Guide

"It's the sweetheart of cyclists, and for good reason: a narrow, winding road shunned by most motorists, lined with tall hardwood whose branches rise and arch to form an expansive canopy shading smooth asphalt.

The deep greens of ferns and trees are interrupted only by the clear blues of Lake Michigan. It's M-119, running from Cross Village to Harbor Springs. This ride features the especially scenic section from Cross Village to Good Hart. Things to see: Tunnels formed by tall trees, vistas of Lake Michigan through hardwoods, Cross Village, Good Hart, historic Legs Inn."

I typically ride a mountain bike because I enjoy the tranquility of trail/dirt road riding over the challenge of a busy road bike route. But the Tunnel of Trees route accomplishes both a perfect view of Lake Michigan and the "up north" feel on a well manicured paved road. It was the first road bike route I really enjoyed. I started my ride from the parking lot of The Birchwood Inn in Harbor Springs on Route 119. I detoured down Lower Shore Drive to get even a better view of the lake and enjoy the beautiful homes along the way. The winding and hilly road was perfect for an afternoon of fall cycling. Both Lower Shore Drive and Route 119 are in great condition and there was very little traffic (10 cars during the 25 mile loop). I made a quick stop in Good Hart to enjoy a Gatorade and talk to the "locals" before continuing north. I made a turn around after about 13 miles and headed back south. This route has the potential of much more than the 18 miles specified on the site. If you follow the Lake you will end up in Wilderness State Park. I would recommend this ride to anyone who likes a winding and somewhat hilly ride. This route will be hard to top.

Been several years since we rode THE TUNNEL OF TREES, but our memories of the rolling hills and beautiful bluffs overlooking Lake Mich. shorelines & sanddunes have us eagerly planning our next trip! We're heading for Harbor Springs again this Sept. for the ride along the bluffs to Cross Village, and maybe even to Mackinaw!
