Sturgeon River

Sturgeon River Professional Review and Guide

"An exciting whitewater run through the rugged and beautiful Sturgeon River Gorge. Not to be confused with the two other major rivers in the state bearing the same name, this northernmost Sturgeon provides a challenging whitewater experience for advanced paddlers through some of the most remote and scenic wilderness in Michigan.

Designated a National Wild and Scenic River, it runs through the 14,000-acre Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness Area, where it has carved a canyon out of red sandstone that is 13 miles long and up to 300 feet deep. The surrounding wilderness—reportedly home to the elusive Sidnaw North wolfpack—contains sections of old-growth red and white pine and hemlock, as well as northern hardwoods such as sugar maple and birch."
