Bare Bluff

Bare Bluff Professional Review and Guide

"East of Bete Grise the pavement ends, the shoreline turns forbiddingly rocky, and one of the truly great U.P. landscapes--a back of beyond known to locals as the Tip of the Keweenaw--begins.

Here woodlands stretch shore to shore, accented by rock-topped ridges, lakes, and cascading streams owing to the big lake. It’s a swath of wild country penetrated by only a few seasonal roads, and reminiscent of Isle Royale. Fortunately recent efforts by The Nature Conservancy translate into ongoing protection for large chunks of the tip."

On July 2, 2006, I made a trip to Bare Bluff with my friend Abby. Upon turning left (from Lac La Belle road) onto Smith Fisheries Road, take the road (path) to the right (past the NO TREASPASSING sign on the tree). Go approx. 3 miles till you see a downed pine blocking the road; park on your right (this is not an easy drive, a 4x4 will be ideal). From the M.N.A. sign, walk up the path about .7 miles, till you see a small blue sign on your left, followed by good map of the trail. The trail is narrow but easy to follow. About 3/4 of the way to the peak the trail become quite steep and requires careful climbing. Your reward is not far off. The view from atop Bare Bluff is an unknown gem of Michigan.
