Sleeper State Park

Sleeper State Park Professional Review and Guide

"Short trails in Michigan's "Thumb" region near Lake Huron. This heavily forested state park offers the best of all situations for a vacationing hiker, with more than 1,000 acres of forest to explore and the beauty and expanse of the Lake Huron shoreline just a short walk out of the trees. The area's 280 campsites attract plenty of use during the summer, but the heavy pine forest separates the activity in the campground from the serenity of the woods.

Set back in the park is an outdoor center off State Park Road, offering an opportunity for large groups of nature lovers to avoid crowded areas nearer the highway. The park's hiking trails go through mature forest, over sand dunes, and through open areas with a mix of grasses and shrubs. The trails are generally empty, and offer a great opportunity to view and photograph a mix of ecosystems and species, since the terrain attracts a great many birds and wild creatures, including white-tailed deer. The 4 miles of prepared and marked trails are the only designated pathways, but adventurous hikers are free to explore where they choose in the park. Special attractions: Lakeshore scenery, birding opportunities."

Nicely maintained trails, easy walking. Did some geocaching along the trails (currently 6-7 posted online with about 10 more to come that the park is putting out).
