Cass River

Cass River Professional Review and Guide

"A surprisingly pretty and remote-feeling river near the industrial centers of Flint and Saginaw. The Cass River maintains a wild, remote character despite its close proximity to the major industrial areas of Flint and Saginaw. The river flows southwest about 60 miles, from its headwaters near Cass City in eastern Tuscola County to its junction with the Saginaw River.

It is nominally canoeable for much of its length, although the upper reaches tend to be shallow and rocky, while the lower section tends to be slow and marshy. In our view, the best option for paddling is the 23-mile stretch between Caro and Frankenmuth."

We took the river from Cass City (Cemetery Rd) to Hurds Corner Rd, going past the Dodge Rd bridge on the way. These sections of the river can only be easily paddled in the earlier spring or after some good rains when the river is up. There are many small rapids from rocks and there are many many rocks. We had to get out to port over a shallow spot and almost at a tree down. We would recommend skipping the first stretch and just getting in at Dodge Rd, it is a beautiful stretch that is much more secluded from houses and roads that took us 2 hours. The river does not move very fast, so lots of paddling in the wide spots. I have also been on the river in later April from Hurds Corner Rd to Deckerville Rd. I would say about the same with shallow spots and rocks making for an adventure, but lots of state hunting land bordering the river makes for nice quiet wilderness to enjoy. The entire area from Cass City all the way to Caro, lots of deer, beavers, mink, ducks, geese, herons and even the occasional eagle can be seen. Water is somewhat clear and the bottom ranges from rocks to gravel to sand.
