Fort Custer Recreation Area

Fort Custer Recreation Area Professional Review and Guide

"Offering a rainbow of loops, this well-organized and popular 16-mile multiple-use trail system offers something for everyone. The difficult Red Loop challenges riders with logs, whoop-de-dos, steeper climbs, and twisting Granny’s Garden.

The mellower Green Loop rolls next to Eagle Lake with a steep switchback climb and two shallow creek crossings. The Blue and Yellow Loops complete the rainbow with mostly obstacle-free trails, perfect for the novice cyclist. Tread: 1.5 miles of paved road, 0.2 mile of dirt road, 15.1 miles of singletrack."

Great Park/Recreation Area with many hiking and biking options. We did the blue Multi-Use trail (beginners) and family loved it. The path is nicely maintained with very few weeds/bushes protruding slightly into the trail...still recommend long sleeves or good bug spray.

I've been out to Ft. Custer to ride multiple times and have throughly enjoyed it. I would consider myself a novice Mountain Biker and have ridden both the green and the yellow trails. I would agree that it is sometimes marked poorly, but I've never gotten lost. I might have just ended up on one of the other trails temporarily.

We went cross country skiing on 2/11/07. The skiing was good although the snowmobile use made things a little rough. I felt the trails were not marked well although we were able to find our way around. There is a lot of gound to cover and much more to see that we didn't have time for.

This was a fantastic ride! Yellow trail is easiest, but a respectable distance, the Red is a more technical ride and the Green is a nice combo of both. A great day's trip!

I'm biased, because I had the privilege of co-designing all the singletrack at the Fort beginning in 1994. I live 5 miles away and ride there about three times a week. Never get bored with it. 90% narrow and twisty singletrack . Full facility 200 site campground. 1/2 mile from Augusta. Great weekend destination.
