Lumberman's Monument Auto Tour

Lumberman's Monument Auto Tour Professional Review and Guide

"This drive begins and ends just west of Tawas City, which is located on the eastern coast of the lower peninsula. The drive, a 68-mile loop, takes you through broadleaf forests, a red pine plantation, and stops at several monuments including the stunning Lumberman’s Monument, a tall bronze sculpture depicting the “river rats” who drove logs down the mighty Au Sable River. You also visit serene Iargo Springs, a fresh spring that percolates water from the forest floor right into the Au Sable River.

You end the loop drive by proceeding through Tuttle Marsh, a wetland dedicated to the preservation of waterfowl and wildlife habitats. Special attractions: Corsair Recreation Area, Lumberman’s Monument, Canoe Racer’s Monument, Iargo Springs, Au Sable River, Foote Dam Overlook, and Tuttle Marsh. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."

I went out on a mission to find a scenic drive to spend my otherwise lazy sunday afternoon, so I ended up on Trails.com. I got signed up, and an hour later I was on the road for this scenic drive. I live near Detroit, so the entire trip took around 8 hours. I only spent a 3-4 on the route itself. I loved the twisty, secluded 2 lane roads lined with tall, thick trees, and the monuments were delightful. I needed to get out of the big city, and this trip was just what I needed.
