I-275 Metro Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"The I-275 Metro Trail is an interesting trek along a trail that, in concept, sounds the opposite of ideal. Who wants to ride along a major interstate highway? We ride to get away from traffic, not embrace it, right? But there’s much more to this wellcared-for path than highway noise (though that is part of this experience). As you get used to the constant flow of the adjacent interstate, it eventually filters in and out of your ride awareness and other interesting things enter. The highway just becomes one part of a widely varied scene. And yes, it’s a great place for a bike ride.
Part of the trail jumps onto the Hines Drive bike path for a few miles. From 8 Mile down to Hines is a ride along an early section of the Metro Trail that hasn’t been updated for a while. The pathway is narrower than that south of Hines Drive and a bit rough in spots due to age. It’s still in reasonably good shape, though. South of Hines nearly all of the trail is new pavement. It’s smooth, with plenty of space for passing. The big surprise is the number of verdant marshes, the pleasant wooden bridges, the woodlands, occasional dramatic changes in elevation, and the chance to see wildlife in numerous places along the way. In all the hustle and bustle there’s a sense of peacefulness as you pedal along."
