Middle Island

Middle Island Professional Review and Guide

"In the small bay on the northwest corner of the Middle Island is the wreck of the Portsmith. The 176-foot ship, loaded with pig iron, ran aground on island shoals in 1867. The wreck of the Portsmith is only part of the fascinating history of Middle Island, located about 2 miles off Rockport’s shores.

In 1881 a lifesaving station was established in the small bay on the northwest end of the island. The lifesaving station was in operation until 1937 and the ruins of the buildings still remain. In 1905 a lighthouse was put into service on the east side of the island. Much of the island is privately owned, so if you want to explore the lighthouse or most of the island, you should get permission from the owners."
