Harsens Island

Harsens Island Professional Review and Guide

"A little-known watery paradise that offers a variety of pleasant day trips for Detroit area kayakers. Harsens Island is the centerpiece of the St. Clair Flats, a fan-shaped pattern of islands, marshes, and channels that has formed where the St. Clair River empties into Lake St. Clair.

With an intricate network of canals and inlets that are more important means of transportation than the local roads during the summer months, Harsens Island is sometimes referred to as “the Venice of the Midwest.” In many ways, the area is reminiscent of the fishing villages of the Eastern Seaboard or the bayous of the Mississippi Delta. Yet it is located less than an hour’s drive from downtown Detroit, via a five-minute car-ferry ride from the city of Algonac."
