Mid-Coast Scenic Drive

Mid-Coast Scenic Drive Professional Review and Guide

"A 123-mile scenic drive exploring several of the long finger peninsulas jutting into the Atlantic Ocean on Maine’s Mid-Coast. This scenic drive follows several long, fingerlike peninsulas that jut southward into the Atlantic Ocean on Maine’s Mid-Coast. This serene seaside landscape is dotted with fishing villages and summer cottages, isolated beaches and surf-swept headlands, quiet coves and picturesque lighthouses, and hundreds of offshore islands. The Mid-Coast is characterized by narrow, rocky peninsulas separated by bays and river channels that reach far inland. The area is a classic “drowned coast,” shaped by huge glaciers that overrode the land and excavated valleys that later filled with seawater.

Special attractions: Bowdoin College, Bowdoin Pines, Basin Cove Falls, Bath, Maine Maritime Museum, Morse Mountain, Popham Beach State Park, Fort Popham, Salt Bay, Damariscotta Reversing Falls, Wiscasset, Fort Edgecomb, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Pemaquid Point, Fort William Henry, Pemaquid Beach Park, Rachel Carson Salt Pond Preserve, fishing, hiking, nature study, and lighthouses."
