Brownfield Bog Wildlife Management Area

Brownfield Bog Wildlife Management Area Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This 5,700-acre WMA stands out as a significant wild area. While the nearby Saco River teems with canoe and kayak traffic in summer, Brownfield Bog WMA sees relatively little pressure. DIF&W maintains an access road and parking area at the bog.

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (DIF&W) specifically manages Brownfield Bog Wildlife Management Area (WMA) for waterfowl, and one hundred nesting boxes have been erected to facilitate nesting. Duck species to be found here include Mallard, Hooded Merganser, Ringnecked Duck, Wood Duck, Common Goldeneye, American Black Duck, and Green-winged and Blue-winged Teal. Also here are Canada Goose, Belted Kingfisher, Great Blue Heron, Pied-billed Grebe, Marsh Wren, American Bittern, Osprey, Virginia Rail, and Northern Waterthrush. Willow Flycatcher, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, and Yellow-throated Vireo breed at Brownfield Bog WMA. A variety of hawks, upland game birds, warblers, and a variety of forest birds are also present. A rarity, Sedge Wren, is noted here. In general, marshbird diversity is exceptional, and waterfowl numbers are excellent. The spring warbler migration draws a large number of different warblers, including but not limited to Pine, Palm, Black-and-white, and Yellow-rumped Warbler."
